Buyers hot for canuck Art

2007-05-06 15:47:37

Canadian art is fetching ever-higher prices thanks to a growing renown for domestic artists and a vigorous market that is attracting eager buyers both at home and abroad, observers say as the spring auction season gets underway.

Competition has broadened for the nation's most sought-after pieces and record-breaking prices will usher in foreign buyers increasingly attracted to the Canadian scene, art watchers predict. Recent sales figures for the Heffel Fine Art Auction House suggest strong growth, particularly over the past five years when the Vancouver house saw total bids shoot from $2.5 million in fall 2001 to $11.8 million in fall 2006.

Art collector and Vancouver businessman Michael Audain says a whole new generation is recognizing the value of investing money in contemporary and historic pieces, believing that their worth will only rise.
